Lakeside Summer Wedding at Lago in Ottawa
Jenn and Kyle were ready to embrace whatever came their way on their wedding day, but they were never expecting a torrential downpour, crazy thunder and lighting over the lake beside their venue, or the massive hail pelting down on them as they tried to capture their first look before their ceremony.
We always talk about the possibility of bad weather with our couples and come up with a couple rain plan options if they have anything taking place outdoors. In collaboration with Stephanie Beach Photography, we put together some back-up locations and reminded Jenn and Kyle that the weather can’t be controlled but how they react to it can be. Instead of letting rain get to them, we always suggest our couples find a way to embrace it - hell, you can even get some extra cute photos out of it. On the morning of their wedding, it was clear that we were in store for a pretty decent dousing of rain, so we packed our cars with towels and umbrellas, planning for the worst while hoping for the best. With the full panel windows in Lago’s Vista Room overlooking Dow’s Lake, we had a front row view to the craziest summer storm we’ve ever seen. It started with a torrential downpour that seemed to come out of nowhere, as the most ominous clouds rolled in over the lake. Suddenly a full blow lightning storm was in progress, right when Jenn and Kyle were scheduled to be taking their first look photos in the Arboretum. A quick message to Stephanie confirmed that they were all caught up in it… and having a blast! The ladies stayed safe and dry in the limo with the champagne, while the guys, who had been dropped off earlier and caught in the rain, joked around in a public washroom, using hand dryers to get the dampness out of their suits. They all showed up to Lago with big smiles, laughing while they recounted the crazy story that has become an hilarious and fond wedding memory for them.
The rest of the day was absolute perfection. Jenn stunned in a form fitting lace gown and veil, with her ladies alternating pastels, while Kyle and his groomsmen all dazzled in navy blue suits. Everything about their day was perfectly personalized to reflect the two of them. Their officiant incorporate lighthearted jokes about their rival NHL hockey teams and laundry chores, while the bridal party speeches were full of hilarious anecdotes that had the whole room near tears.
The decor was all picked out by Jenn, who had the room filled with cute signs, custom napkins, photos, linens in those same, soft pastels, and adorable heart-shaped cookies at each place setting. She made sure to sneak into the room before guests arrived to check everything out, exclaiming at the stunning floral arrangements, a the macaron tower dessert display, and every now and then throughout the night we would catch her looking around appreciatively, taking in every detail with the happiest smile on her face.
